UPDATED REVIEW: I just learned a lot more about Napoleon Hill and as it turns out he was a huge con man and compulsive liar. I wouldn’t want to read a full Napoleon Hill book as I think it will feel well outdated, but I have appreciation for him and how he birthed an entire industry on personal growth / success-mindedness. They are just not as advanced as the personal/leadership growth conversations that are happening now. They are good thoughts as far as personal growth (focus on what you want, make a plan, remind yourself of it every day, etc). ![]() ![]() Napoleon wrote most of his thoughts in the early 20th century, shortly after the Great Depression. He was selling millions of books before Tony Robbins’ parents were even born. He is a legend when it comes to personal growth and motivational speaking. So I chose to put my review under this book which seems close enough.ĭream Big is a series of excerpts from Napoleons writing. He is best known for his 1937 self-help book Think and Grow Rich, which is one of the best-selling self-help books of all time. ![]() He was born on October 26, 1883, in Pound, Virginia, and died on November 8, 1970, in South Carolina. The book I read is called “Dream Big! Overcoming Fear and Achieving Success” but I can’t find the title on Goodreads. Napoleon Hill was an American author and one of the founders of personal success literature. This isn’t actually the book I read but it’s close. ![]()

![]() Kenny then backtracks to look closely at each of the main areas of philosophical exploration in this period: knowledge and understanding the nature of the physical universe metaphysics (the most fundamental questions there are aboutĮxistence) mind and soul the nature and content of morality political philosophy and God. It is ideal as the first thing to read for someone new to this wonderfully creative period. Kenny first tells the story of modern philosophy chronologically: his lively, accessible narrative brings the philosophers to life and fills in the historical and intellectual background to their work. The great minds we meet include Ren Descartes, traditionally seen as the founder of modern philosophy the great British philosophers Hobbes, Locke, and Hume continental thinkers such as Spinoza, Liebniz, and Hegel and the towering figure of Immanuel Kant, who perhaps more than any other made philosophy what it is today. Kenny introduces us to some of the world's most original and influential thinkers and helps us gain an understanding of their famous works.
